Where the local legend practiced her trade.

In Short
The house that Betsy Ross rented between 1773 and 1786 is where the widow sewed--on commission from the Continental Congress--what is reputed to be the first American flag. While the legend for some historians remains in doubt, the structure, which was donated to the city of Philadelphia in 1937 and restored that year, remains one of Philadelphia's greatest attractions, second only to the Liberty Bell. The nine-room house now features the Upholstery Room, where the family sewing business was conducted, the Kitchen, with colonial cooking utensils and the Flag Room, where some of Betsy Ross's personal affects are on view.

The Extras

A self-guided tour, for those who want to explore the two-and-a-half stories on their own, takes about a half hour. A prominent gift shop provides Revolution-era tchotchkes.
